THE BENEFITS OF COMPOST....

One of the major benefits of compost is that spent mushroom soil is just what the name implies… It is "spent" meaning that the most beneficial aspects of the original material are already used up. What people are getting is the leftover mushroom growing substrate after the beneficial nutrients are largely used up from several crops of mushrooms. The "spent" soil is then moved to secondary markets where it still has soil amendment qualities but is now a significantly "reduced" product in terms of its usefulness having far fewer macro and micronutrients remaining.
It is a "leftover" residual product, thus it is properly designated as "spent."

Compost on the other hand, is a "primary product" in that it contains all of those macro and micronutrients to provide its full benefits to the plants.

So basically, people buying spent mushroom soil are largely buying a product that has had much of its usefulness already used up.
It also tends to be much higher in soluble salts and can also contain an undesirably high concentration of calcium that can be harmful to some plants.

Spent Mushroom Soil (SMS):
• What it is:
SMS is the leftover substrate from mushroom farms, typically composed of straw, manure, and other materials that have been used to grow mushrooms.

• Nutrient Content:
While SMS is a good source of organic matter, it is generally lower in readily available nutrients than traditional compost, as the mushrooms have already utilized some of the nutrients

One other factor/concern with spent mushroom soil: if you don't know how long the material has been stockpiled at a secondary location after leaving the mushroom growing facility and before arriving at the landscape supply center, there is the risk that the mushroom soil can contain significant weed seed contamination. If it has been stockpiled for a significant amount of time out in the open, it is susceptible to weed seed infestation. There is really no way to know that unless you know exactly what the source of the material is and how long it has been sitting around.
